Travel the Celtic World . . . Right in Your Own Backyard!
On Saturday, August 21, you won't have to go too far to experience all the
colors, flavors and wonders of the Celtic world. The Celtic Highland Games of
the Quad Cities will bring the British Isles home to you, via a day-long
festival at the Mississippi Valley Fairgrounds in Davenport, Iowa.
The sixth-annual festival offers more than 14 hours of sports, music, dance,
arts and heritage activities celebrating the cultures of Scotland,
Ireland, Wales, Cornwall, Brittany, Galicia and the Isle of Man. The event
runs from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., with all activities included in the gate price.
Attractions include the Scottish "heavy games," which features more
than 30 male and female athletes competing in such traditional events as the
caber toss, hammer throw and sheaf toss. Another event, the bagpiping and
drumming competition, culminate in the playing of the "massed
bands," where 14 bagpipe bands play as one. The third competition, in
Highland dance, will attract more than 80 dancers from a seven-state area of
the United States.
Additional activities on tap include entertainment by Wylde Nept, Stones in
the Field, Barley House Band and Danny Proud; educational workshops on Irish
drumming, Celtic spirtuality and other topics; demonstrations of Irish dance
and opportunities to learn Ceili (kay-lee) dancing; as well as tastes of
Gaelic food and a chance to shop vendor's row. Other family-oriented events
include animal displays, sheep herding demonstrations, children's games,
crafts, the noon Parade of Tartans and Celtic heritage information. The
fun all wraps up with an evening party, known as a Ceilidh (kay-lee), which
features music and dancing. Admission to the Ceilidh is included in the day's
events. Guests may attend the Ceilidh party only for just $5 after 5 p.m.
Tickets are $10 for adults; $5 for students of all ages and seniors; and $25
for a group pass that admits five people, any mix of ages. There is no charge
for children under five. Admission is good for all day, and participants may
re-enter the grounds with a special wristband.
The Celtic Highland Games is sponsored by the Blue Cat Brew Pub, Newschannel
